I won’t invite Maid of Honour’s boyfriend to my wedding and now she refuses to come’
Sending out wedding invitations can be awkward. Do you give out plus ones or opt for strictly invite-only?
Of course, for a lot of people it will depend on budget, because who can afford to pay for a fancy meal for someone they’ve never even met? But, when it comes to loved ones, like best friends and family member, you might assume that partners will be included.
However, one bride-to-be has bee left in a bit of a sticky situation, after telling her best friend and Maid of Honour that her boyfriend can’t come to her wedding. And, to make matter worse, the friend responded by saying if her boyfriend can’t come, she won’t either.
“Myself and my Maid of Honour have been best friends for around six years. She got into a relationship with her boyfriend about three years ago. He doesn’t like me, because every time they argue she come to me and she stays with me and my fiancé,” the bride explained on Reddit’s Am I The A**hole forum.
“Around three years ago I had a party for my birthday, my best friend had just gotten with her boyfriend 10 days previous, and insisted that I invited him, so I told her she could bring him. When they came, they both sat in the corner for the entire night and didn’t speak to anyone else, didn’t dance and didn’t even wish me a happy birthday.”
Sadly, the bride says things went from bad to worse the following year, when her best friend found out she was pregnant, but her boyfriend “didn’t want anything to do with it.”
“He told her he was leaving if she carried on with the pregnancy. So I stepped up and helped her. I went to every doctors appointment, paid for all her pregnancy vitamins and bought her new clothes to fit her changing body,” she said.
Devastatingly, the pregnancy ended in a miscarriage due to the sheer amount of stress her best friend was in, and she had to be rushed into hospital.
“I was by her side through everything, stayed at the hospital with her and bought everything she needed. When she woke from surgery, she thanked me for everything I’d done, and her boyfriend got angry,” she continued.
“He said that I didn’t do anything for her and that I was a sh** friend. I let it go because I thought he was just angry and upset about everything that had happened. But even now he still tries to stop her from seeing me and whenever she is with me he is constantly messaging her so we can’t spend any time together just us.”
So, the bride-to-be told her best friend she didn’t want her partner to come to the wedding and risk ruining the day like he had done at her birthday all those years prior, and it did not go down well.
“We have spoken about his dislike for me and she said that she wished things were different but he is stuck in his opinion of me and there’s nothing I can do to change it,” she said, adding, “Why would I want someone who doesn’t like me to be there on my most special day?”
Sadly, her friend didn’t see it in the same way and told her friend if her boyfriend isn’t allowed to come to the wedding, she won’t be either.
While most people on Reddit agreed that the bride should stand her ground and not allow her best friend’s boyfriend to come to the wedding, others advised that her friend might be in what appears to be an abusive relationship, which could play a huge factor in her decision making.
